About Our Society

Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras IGreek Orthodox Philoptochos Society

The Philoptochos Society is the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and one of the largest women’s philanthropic organizations in the United States.

Our Beginning

Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I, who was serving as Archbishop of North and South America, established the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society as the duly acredited women’s philanthropic society of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in November 1931.

The vision of Philoptochos is the same today as it was presented at the 1931 Clergy Laity Congress:

“Be a part of the National movement and begin to solicit funds, food, clothing and anything else that will bring relief to our needy brethren; provide housing and cooperate with welfare and other philanthropic institutions for better results. Indifference to the cries of our suffering brothers is a crime. We must care for the needy through the advancement of the work of Christ”

The Philoptochos vision began in our past, is with us in our present, and will continue into the future.

Our Legacy

st katherines philoptochos bake sale 1971Our Legacy

Since there was no established church at the time, the ladies met in individual homes and planned many activities to raise money to help the Greek community. By 1940 St Katherine’s had become a part of the National Philoptochos Society.

With their sewing machines, the ladies played an active part during World War II in the Red Cross Drives.

The society’s first funds were derived from initiation and membership fees. These funds were not enough to meet its obligations, so the organization began having bake sales. Once the community had a community center all the baking was done in the center’s kitchen. Many pastries and homemade breads came out of this kitchen.

The Bake Sale and Luncheon is our number one annual fund raising project. Through these efforts, our National, Metropolis and local commitments are met.

Bake Sales have been held every spring since 1947, and all the ladies work hard to make them bigger and better every year.
