Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society
The Philoptochos Society is the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and one of the largest women’s philanthropic organizations in the United States.
Our Beginning
Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I, who was serving as Archbishop of North and South America, established the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society as the duly acredited women’s philanthropic society of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in November 1931.
The vision of Philoptochos is the same today as it was presented at the 1931 Clergy Laity Congress:
“Be a part of the National movement and begin to solicit funds, food, clothing and anything else that will bring relief to our needy brethren; provide housing and cooperate with welfare and other philanthropic institutions for better results. Indifference to the cries of our suffering brothers is a crime. We must care for the needy through the advancement of the work of Christ”
The Philoptochos vision began in our past, is with us in our present, and will continue into the future.
A Message From Our President Elizabeth Render
Thanks for taking the time to visit our website! The St. Katherine's Philoptochos Society is a wonderful dedicated group of women who are members of the The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Columbia, SC. We work throughout the year to help those in need on a local and National level. We do so by hosting luncheons, taking up collections, and sponsoring a bake sale/luncheon in the spring. We are very fortunate to be in a generous community that supports our endeavors. Please continue to peruse through our website to learn more about us.
Yours in Christ,
Elizabeth Render
